A gifted sculptor, painter, and designer, Piero Fornasetti was a multi-hyphenate whose eye for the fantastic and surreal distinguished his art. He created more than 11,000 items in his lifetime, the most famous of which is undoubtedly the Tema e Variazioni plates which feature the opera singer Lina Cavalieri’s face reimagined as a thief, an Arab princess, and 350 other ways. Fornasetti’s distinct black and white style of illustration is famous the world over; his legacy is continued by his son Barnaba.
