Though the flowers around us are fully in bloom, this month's playlist is not about nature or the coming summer. It is quite the opposite, for the month of May we are highlighting industrial music.
From the classic EBM to dark-wave, though it is a love and hate relationship, cities and industrial landscapes have been the muses of these groups.
Being stuck in that ugly environment, music and partying are the only ways of escaping the dreary reality of daily life.
The first track “Etre assis ou danser” is a nice summary. It tells the story of a boy going out every night and dancing all night long until he ultimately dies, before concluding by saying “it's normal nowadays”.
Rythmbox, synthesizers, and industrial music cannot be dissociated from one another and the resulting music is hypnotic and repetitive, made by man and machine working hand in hand. No breakbeat here, everything is where it's supposed to be, time after time, measure after measure. Just like a factory working mechanically for the sake of product after product, until one day hopefully, the revolution emerges.
