A couturier so meticulous and exacting that he was called the “master of us all” by Christian Dior, Cristobal Balenciaga came from a war-torn Spain and settled in Paris. He was known immediately for his exquisite craftsmanship, as well as innovative silhouettes. The bubble skirt and cocoon coat are some of the contributions he made to fashion, as well as removing the waist. This was in contrast to the popular silhouette of Dior’s “New Look.” Balenciaga is now under the creative control of Demna Gvasalia who is maintaining the brand DNA of architectural exploration while modernizing and reviving a stagnating business.
