Welcome to the first installation of the Leisure Center Playlist.
This month’s curation kicks off decidedly warm and cheerful featuring tracks from French indie dance pop artists including Keep Dancing Inc. and Lewis Ofman. Crisp harps punch through lush, sweeping synth pads on Keep Dancing’s title track from their latest EP - “Restructuration”. This energy is exacerbated by the next track, Lewis Ofman’s “Yo Bene”. The musician, songwriter and producer, who created tracks for several runways during Paris Fashion Week last year creates a dreamy yet energetic composition employing an irresistibly infectious bassline, seamlessly coupled with equally catchy pitched vocal samples. As the playlist progresses we begin to delve deeper into more entrancing and dark cuts. Sydney Valette channels a droning cold wave vibe with drilling synths and mechanical vocals that urge the listener to “Make some noise and fight back”. Towards the end of the playlist, electronic duo Nova Materia deliver a hyper-rhythmic and dystopic track, effortlessly blending post-punk and dance music influences. Backing vocals drenched in effects intertwined with mechanical whirring and percussion serve to boost the eeriness of the piece, contributing to its unique texture and rhythm. A growling synth bass punctuates the final track of the playlist, rounding out the sonic palette with the now familiar sounds of the previous ones. Presque l’Amour’s Julie Mouchel’s melancholic vocals create a tension that is resolved by the glimmering piano breakdown at the end.
